Buying a mattress is personal enough without adding back surgery to the equation.
After surgery, I went through two mattresses that simply didn't work for me. The first was too firm and became uncomfortable for me as a side sleeper. The second wasn't particularly firm, but I still couldn't get comfortable on it.
Eventually, I decided to try the Novilla 14-inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress. I've been sleeping on it since last December, and so far, I've been happy with my choice.
That doesn't mean it's a medical solution—or that it will work for everyone. This is simply my experience with one mattress and one very particular sleeper: me.
Why I Chose the Novilla Mattress
After striking out twice, I wasn't looking for a miracle mattress. I wanted something that felt comfortable, offered the kind of support I personally prefer, and didn't cost a fortune. The Novilla 14-inch mattress caught my attention because of its memory-foam construction, medium feel, and price point.
I also liked the idea of having a mattress with some cushioning without feeling like I was sinking endlessly into it.
The Medium Feel Was the Right Fit for Me
The biggest thing I've noticed is the overall feel.
I would describe it as medium to medium-plush, although firmness is subjective and can feel different depending on body type, sleeping position, bed frame, and personal preference.
For me, it provides enough cushioning to feel comfortable without having the overly soft sensation I was trying to avoid.
That's particularly important because I'm a combination sleeper. I move between my side, back, and other positions during the night, so I prefer a mattress that feels reasonably consistent as I move around.
How It Feels as a Combination Sleeper
One of the reasons I've continued using the Novilla is that I don't feel like I'm constantly fighting the mattress when I change positions.
The memory foam has some give, but I don't find myself disappearing into it. For my sleeping style, that balance has worked well.
Of course, everyone's body and preferences are different. What feels comfortably supportive to me could feel too soft or too firm to someone else.
What About Sleeping Hot?
Temperature was another consideration for me. The Novilla mattress I purchased uses gel-infused memory foam and is marketed with cooling and airflow features. In my own experience, I haven't had a problem with routinely waking up overheated on it.
That's about as far as I'd take the claim. I wouldn't say that this mattress will keep every sleeper cool, because sleeping temperature depends on much more than the mattress itself—including room temperature, bedding, pajamas, body chemistry, and individual preference.
Living in the California desert, I pay attention to this stuff. If I'm uncomfortable at night, I'm going to notice.
What I Like After Several Months
The biggest positive is simple: I'm comfortable sleeping on it.
After going through two mattresses that didn't work for me, finding one that I actually enjoy sleeping on has been a relief in the everyday, non-medical sense of the word.
A Note About Back Surgery
Because back surgery is part of my story, I want to be especially clear about this: This is not a medical review, and I'm not suggesting that this mattress treats back pain, supports surgical recovery, improves spinal alignment, or is medically recommended after surgery.
My surgery simply influenced what I was looking for in a mattress and made comfort more important to me. If you're recovering from surgery or dealing with a medical condition, your healthcare professional is the appropriate person to ask about your individual needs.
I'd pay particular attention to the exact model, size, specifications, current price, and return policy before purchasing. Novilla sells multiple mattress models, and specifications and policies can change.
My Grateful Kitty Take
One additional consideration is materials. According to the manufacturer, the "memory foam is crafted with CertiPUR-US certified foam, made without harmful substances. The soft-to-touch cover meets rigorous skin safety standards for a gentle sleep surface. ISPA certification verifies its compliance with international sleep product standards for quality and durability." and "OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 verifies: Safer chemicals – Made with chemicals safer for human health and the environment. Every component of this mattress, including all thread, buttons, and trims, is tested against more than 1,000 regulated and unregulated chemicals that may be harmful to human health."
Where I Bought Mine
I purchased my Novilla mattress through Amazon. Because product models and availability can change, check the current listing carefully before ordering.
